Summary:
Since last two years, the Laundry Girl has been living an inconspicuous life. But when the man she loves comes calling for help, Indira Sanyal agrees to come out of her retirement. Little does she know that this comeback is going to drag her into the sinister world of sex slavery… Whether she is ready to wade through this morally deprived and ominous realm is not the question now, it is whether she will make it out alive or not.
Review:
Laundry Girl 2.0 by Yamini Pustake Bhalerao is a fast-paced noir thriller, whose protagonist is a fixer, private investigator, hustler, ex-convict, and a street fighter. When the author approached me for a review request, I was sold on the characterization of Indira Sanyal. Such a characterization of a woman quite a rarity where books by Indian authors are concerned.
The second book in the Laundry Girl series can be read as a standalone. A gripping thriller that follows Indira Sanyal, recalled from retirement to solve a sensitive case involving human trafficking and sex slavery. A case involving a diplomat that needs to be solved discreetly.
From the dark alleys of Paris to Prague and to Ukraine, Indira is assisted by the UNIMO agent, Christoph. The book keeps you swiping the pages with all the twists and turns. The characters including the morally depraved ones are well etched. It does get a bit disturbing to read occasionally…. definitely not for the faint-hearted.
I am all for feel-good books. Books that are an escape from reality. But ever so often, you come across a book that makes you question humanity. Indeed the book is a thriller but you cannot help be affected by the reality of human trafficking. Worse still when it preys on the most vulnerable of people and when it involves children.
Laundry Girl 2.0 is available on the Juggernaut app and at the Juggernaut website. Previously, I have discussed my liking for the app. I found some absolute gems there. This book could well be added to the growing list.
Trigger warning: Sex slavery, human trafficking, and child abuse.

The characterisation of the protagonist is rare where Indian books are concerned. Do check it out.
